Around 3 Billion people cook using solid fuels on open fires worldwide. This cooking practice produces dangerous amounts of smoke and carbon monoxide which prove to be fatal over time.
Our target is to eliminate this problem from Rwanda, where 80% of the population burn solid fuels to cook their meals. With our solution, we hope to extract at least 50% of the smoke produced, which will considerably reduce exposure and improve the owner's health.
Meaning 'to fan a fire' or 'oxygenate' in Rwandan, Guhungiza is our system to extract smoke from the homes of people cooking over open fires.
Our solution is to use the heat from the fire, the source of the smoke, to power a fan which will extract the smoke from the room. As well as extracting any smoke produced by the fire, we will also use another fan to inject air into the fire, which results in a cleaner burning fire, so less smoke!
