ELEC70107 Professional Competencies Portfolio with industrial experience

Lecturer(s): Prof Kristel Fobelets; Dr Teh Evona

Aims

Professional registration with the relevant engineering body (the IET in this case) is the natural next step upon graduating and entering the professional world. It demonstrates that you have reached an internationally recognised standard of competence, while acknowledging your commitment to maintaining this in the future. This is in line with The Engineering Council's guidance for the accreditation of HE programmes which includes an item to "Plan and record self-learning and development as the foundation of lifelong learning/CPD"
For MEng graduates the Professional Registration level is Chartered Engineer (CEng) which requires at least 2 years of professional experience.
In this module you will complete 3 of the 17 competencies in the online Career Manager tool on the IET website to start your Professional Registration

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the Professional Competencies module you will be able to:
1. Analyse the requirements to become a Chartered Engineer by the IET.
2. Adopt an inclusive approach to engineering practice and recognise the responsibilities, benefits and importance of supporting equality, diversity and inclusion.
3. Critically analyse your current knowledge and skills to determine where there are gaps
4. Evaluate your experience against set criteria to determine which competencies they meet
5. Create a career plan for the first 2 years of their professional career to acquire the remaining competencies

Syllabus

This module builds on your previous professional work experience. You are expected to have either completed the Electrical Engineering Industrial Placement module (ELEC60016) or the Group Consultancy Project (ELEC60014) and undertaken at least 8 weeks of relevant summer internships in 2nd and/or 3rd year which have been awarded additional ECTS.
