ELEC70097 Research Project: MSc Control and Optimisation

Aims

The Research Project is the culmination of your postgraduate studies and constitutes a piece of individual research that must include some element of originality. For this module you will complete an individual research project, normally in one of the department's research areas. The research is normally conducted at Imperial within the Control and Power group in collaboration with one of the specialist researchers and academics. Projects in industry are also possible, if the opportunity arises, and need to be approved by the MSc Director and one academic supervisor. Projects within Imperial College, but in other Departments, are also encouraged with prior approval by the MSc Director.

Learning Outcomes

On successfully completing this module, you should be able to:
1. Plan and execute safely a series of experiments or computations;
2. Take personal responsibility for your work;
3. Tackle open-ended research work and apply prior theoretical knowledge to practical situations;
4. Select and use appropriate experimental methods or computer-based tools towards the successful completion of your project aims;
5. Analyse, synthesise and evaluate information from a wide range of sources;
6. Formulate and apply appropriate solutions;
7. Communicate the outcomes of the project work effectively and accurately, in both a written and oral format;
8. Learn effectively for the purpose of continuing professional development; 9. Formulate hypotesis and conjectures pertinent to applied problems;

Syllabus

The content varies annually, however before the start of term you will be sent a booklet outlining the various research areas on offer by academic supervisors. In the first week of term you will have the opportunity to attend the Research Area Presentations which is an opportunity for supervisors to outline the research areas that will be on offer for the current academic year. You can work collaboratively with your supervisor to decide on a project after allocation of supervisors. You are required to attend professional and research skills training workshops.
